The two factions in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have announced the commencement of reconciliation effort at bringing an end to the five months old divisive crisis rocking the party.
Cairo Ojougboh, Deputy National Chairman of the party under the faction of Ali Modu-Sheriff led National Working Committee (NWC) and Senator Ben Obi, National Secretary of the party under the Caretaker committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi held a joint press conference where the decision of both parties to come together and resolve the crisis was made public.
Makarfi had late on Monday night disclosed that the party under his leadership has been making overture to Modu-Sheriff with a view to settling the crisis which has threatened to kill the party.
Ojougboh, reading out the text of a press release jointly signed by Modu-Sheriff and Makarfi said that both camps have seen the need to come together and salvage the party rather than allow it die because of needless differences.
Both however, noted that the ongoing talks is without prejudice to all outstanding court matters.
The statement jointly signed by the two leaders read in part; “This is without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court. At a meeting held this morning between the two of us, a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party, PDP, was deliberated upon.
“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party since the loss of the 2015 general election after 15years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds. And bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process. Bringing relief to the teeming supporters of our great party and to the benefit of our great country.
Based on the above, we have both agreed to Consult widely with all relevant organs of the party; set up a joint committee that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party across the country and in Diaspora; Pursue the vision of the founding fathers of our great party.
“Details of all the above will be made public soonest.
“We therefore call on all party members to remain calm and refrain from any actions and utterances that could further bring about divisions or dispute the party”
It would be recalled that the PDP became openly factionalized following the decision of the party stakeholders to dump Modu-Sheriff and prevent him from contesting the chairmanship position at the May 21 Port-Harcourt convention.
Senator Ben Obi who made a short comment after Ojougboh had read the statement agreed with the content of what was read and said further that it was a manifestation of reconciliation effort by the party leaders.
